Class 5 Social Studies Chapter 4 Question Answers

1. What is the difference between weather and climate?

Answer: Weather is the condition of any place at a particular time (short period of time). And the climate is the average weather conditions of that place over a long period of time.

2. How does the climate of a place affect the people living there?

Answer: Food habits, clothing styles, houses, and activities of the people are affected by the climate of any place.

3. Name the five important factors that determine the climate of a place.

Answer: (1) Distance from the Equator
(2) Height above the sea level
(3) Distance from the sea
(4) Winds
(5) The amount of moisture in the air (Humidity)

4. Why do areas near the Equator receive more heat from the Sun, than those near the poles?

Answer: The areas near the Equator are closer and in front of the Sun. The Sunrays fall directly and vertically in these areas. So the areas near the Equator receive more heat.
The areas near the poles are a little far and not directly in front of the Sun. The Sunrays fall slanting in the areas. So these areas receive lesser heat as compared to the Tropical region.

5. Where are the following heat zones located? Describe the general climate of each zone.

(a) Frigid Zone;
(b) Temperate Zone;
(c) Tropical Zone

Answer:

(a) Frigid Zone is located between the Arctic Circle (66.5°N) and the North Pole (90°N) in the Northern Hemisphere and between the Antarctic Circle (66.5°S) and the South Pole (90°S) in the Southern Hemisphere.
The frigid Zone receives a very little amount of heat from the Sun. So the climate in the Frigid Zone is generally very cold.

(b) Temperate Zone is located between the Arctic Circle (66.5°N) and the Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N) in the Northern Hemisphere and between the Antarctic Circle (66.5°S) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5°S) in the Southern Hemisphere.
Temperate Zone receives a moderate amount of heat from the Sun. So the climate in the Temperate Zone is generally moderate. (Neither too cold nor too hot)

(c) Tropical Zone (Torrid Zone) is located between the Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5°S).
Tropical Zone receives the maximum amount of heat from the Sun. So the climate in the Tropical Zone is generally very hot. Heat Zones of the Earth.

Class 5 Social Studies Chapter 4 Question Answers

6. How do winds affect the climate of a place?

Answer: Different types of winds (hot, cool, dry, or full of moisture) flow in particular directions in all the areas. Winds bring heat and moisture with them. So the climate is affected by winds.

7. How is the humidity in Chennai different from that of Jaisalmer in the Thar Desert?

Answer: Humidity is very high in Chennai because it is very close to the sea. And humidity is very little in Jaisalmer in the Thar Desert because it is far away from the sea. Class 5 Social Studies Chapter 4 Question Answers – MCQs
